Audio Pitch Changer — Transpose Recordings Without Changing Their Duration

Pitch shifting without time stretching is the core problem that made audio production software valuable. Naively changing the speed of audio changes both pitch and duration — playing a recording at half speed drops pitch by an octave and makes everything twice as long. Modern pitch shifting algorithms decouple these properties using phase vocoder or granular synthesis techniques, allowing pitch to change independently of duration. A vocalist whose demo was recorded in the wrong key can be transposed to match the arranged track. A guitar riff recorded slightly flat can be corrected to concert pitch without rerecording.

Semitone and cent adjustments serve different use cases. Transposing by whole semitones shifts pitch by the intervals of the Western chromatic scale — moving a recording from C to E major requires shifting up 4 semitones. Cent adjustments (100 cents per semitone) provide fine-tuning correction: a recording that is 15 cents sharp can be pulled down without changing the key. This fine-tuning is critical for ensemble recordings where one instrument is slightly out of tune with the others — a 20 cent correction is inaudible as pitch shifting but audible as improved tuning.

Voice pitch manipulation requires more careful treatment than instrument pitch shifting. Shifting a voice recording up by more than 3-4 semitones produces a chipmunk quality from formant distortion — the resonant cavity characteristics of the vocal tract shift along with the fundamental frequency, making the voice sound physically smaller. Formant preservation shifts pitch while keeping the vocal tract resonances constant, maintaining a natural voice character at higher pitches. The pitch changer applies formant correction automatically for voice material and optionally allows manual formant control for creative applications where unnatural pitch effects are intentional.
