Image DPI Converter — Set Print Resolution Without Changing Pixel Dimensions

DPI (dots per inch) is print metadata embedded in an image file — it tells a printer how many pixels to place per inch of paper. A 3000×4000 pixel image at 72 DPI will print as a blurry 41×55 inch poster. The same image tagged as 300 DPI prints as a sharp 10×13 inch photo. The pixel data is identical; only the embedded resolution instruction changes. This is what DPI conversion does — it rewrites the metadata without touching a single pixel.

Print shops, publishing platforms, and submission systems frequently require 300 DPI minimum. Images captured on smartphones are typically saved at 72 DPI by default even when the pixel count is more than sufficient for high-quality printing. Changing the DPI tag from 72 to 300 corrects the metadata mismatch and satisfies the submission requirement without requiring a rescan or recapture.

The important distinction: DPI conversion without resampling changes only the metadata. DPI conversion with resampling adds or removes pixels to physically resize the image at the new DPI. For submission requirements, metadata-only DPI change is usually sufficient. For actual print production where a fixed physical size at a specific DPI is required, resampling may be necessary — be clear about which operation your use case demands.
