Image Saturation Adjuster — Vivid Colors, Muted Tones, and the Range Between Them
Color saturation controls how vivid or muted the colors in an image appear — how much they depart from gray toward their full chromatic intensity. A freshly photographed image from a smartphone often looks dull compared to the scene it captured because phone sensors prioritize noise reduction over color saturation, producing muted, conservative colors that look acceptable without ever looking spectacular. Boosting saturation selectively amplifies the color information that was captured but suppressed, producing images whose colors match the vivid impression the scene made in person. This is not adding color that was not there — it is restoring the chromatic intensity the scene genuinely had.
The distinction between saturation and vibrance determines whether color enhancement looks natural or artificial. Saturation applies uniform amplification to all colors equally — pushing every hue toward its maximum intensity at the same rate. At moderate values this looks good on most content; at higher values, skin tones become orange, blue skies turn neon, and green foliage becomes unnaturally electric. Vibrance applies a non-linear amplification that prioritizes muted colors for stronger boosting while protecting already-saturated colors — particularly skin tones — from over-amplification.
