PDF/A is the ISO 19005 archival standard for PDF — a restricted subset of the format designed to ensure a document remains self-contained and renderable decades from now without dependencies on external systems, fonts, or software. Regular PDF files can reference external fonts, link to external resources, contain executable JavaScript, and include encryption — all features that create rendering dependencies. A PDF/A file embeds every resource it needs: all fonts are subsetted and embedded, all color spaces are explicitly defined, and no external references or executable content is permitted.

Regulatory and legal archiving requirements increasingly mandate PDF/A. The US federal court system requires PDF/A for electronic filing. ISO 32000 compliance for banking records, healthcare document retention regulations in the EU and US, and many government document management systems specify PDF/A as the required archival format. Submitting a regular PDF to a PDF/A-only repository either fails validation or produces a warning that may flag the document for manual review. Converting to PDF/A before submission eliminates this friction.

PDF/A comes in three conformance levels — PDF/A-1, PDF/A-2, and PDF/A-3 — with increasing feature support at each level. PDF/A-1 (the strictest) prohibits transparency, JPEG 2000, and file attachments. PDF/A-2 adds support for JPEG 2000 compression and optional content layers.
