HEIC to JPG Converter — iPhone Photos That Actually Open on Windows and Android
Apple switched iPhone default photo format from JPG to HEIC with iOS 11 in 2017. HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) delivers roughly twice the compression of JPG at equivalent quality — a photo that was 3MB as JPG becomes 1.5MB as HEIC. The problem is that Windows, Android, and most third-party software have no idea what to do with a .heic file. Windows Photo Viewer shows an error. Most web upload forms reject it silently.
The incompatibility hits hardest in three scenarios: emailing photos to someone on Windows who cannot open them, uploading photos to websites that only accept JPG/PNG, and importing iPhone photos into non-Apple editing software. Converting HEIC to JPG solves all three instantly. The JPG will be slightly larger than the HEIC source but universally compatible with every piece of image-handling software ever made.
If you want to prevent HEIC files from being created in the first place: go to iPhone Settings → Camera → Formats and switch from High Efficiency to Most Compatible. This forces JPG capture. However for photos you have already taken as HEIC — which may number in the thousands if you have used an iPhone since 2017 — batch conversion to JPG is the practical solution.
