Video format incompatibility creates friction at every handoff point in a video workflow. An MKV file downloaded from a media server will not play on an Apple TV without transcoding. A MOV file from a Mac screen recording will not upload to LinkedIn without error. An AVI file from a 2010 camcorder will not play in a modern browser's HTML5 video player. A WebM file from a Chrome screen capture will not open in Windows Media Player or most video editors. The video format converter resolves these incompatibilities by re-wrapping or re-encoding video into the target format the receiving device or platform requires.
Container format and codec are two separate decisions that together determine compatibility. A container (MP4, MKV, MOV, AVI) is the wrapper that organizes video streams, audio streams, subtitles, and metadata. A codec (H.264, H.265, VP9, AV1) is the algorithm that compresses the video data inside the container. MP4 containing H.264 is the universal combination — every device and platform manufactured after 2010 plays it without plugins. Converting to MP4 does not automatically choose H.264 inside; the converter must specify both the target container and the target codec for the output to be fully compatible.
Platform submission specifications eliminate format guesswork for common upload destinations. YouTube recommends MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio at 48kHz. Instagram Reels requires MP4 or MOV at 9:16 aspect ratio between 3 and 90 seconds. TikTok accepts MP4 and MOV. Vimeo recommends H.264 at up to 8 Mbps for 1080p. Facebook accepts MP4 and MOV with H.264. Netflix delivery specifications require specific codec profiles and bit depths depending on the content tier. The format converter's preset list targets these platform requirements so you select a destination rather than configuring codec parameters manually.
