H.264 and H.265 (HEVC) are the two dominant compression codecs, and the choice between them matters. The trade-off is encoding time and compatibility: H.265 takes longer to encode and is not supported by all older devices and platforms. Bitrate is the single most direct control over the quality-size trade-off. A 1080p video encoded at 4 Mbps looks excellent for talking-head interview content with limited motion. The same bitrate applied to fast-paced sports footage or screen recordings with rapid transitions produces blocking artifacts because the codec cannot represent the rapid pixel changes within the allocated data budget. Matching bitrate to content type — higher for fast motion, lower for static talking heads — produces better quality at smaller sizes than applying a single bitrate value regardless of content.
